Every July, Sophia University offers the Summer Session in East Asian Studies and Japanese Language<\/strong> for students enrolled at universities overseas, welcoming participants from around the world. In addition to classes on the Japanese language, culture, and society, the program provides opportunities for participants to deepen their understanding of Japan from multiple perspectives through cultural experiences and interaction with fellow students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, as part of the Sophia Africa Future Initiative  Collaborations(SAFICs)<\/strong>, four scholarship recipients from Africa are participating in the Summer Session: one student from Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) in Egypt, one student from Arrupe Jesuit University in Zimbabwe, and two students from Stellenbosch University in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Welcome Party held on the first day of the program, the students enjoyed interacting with university faculty, staff, fellow participants, and the university\u2019s vice president. They are excited about the three weeks of study and intercultural exchange ahead of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the coming weeks, the students will participate not only in classes but also in exchanges with Japanese students, fieldwork activities outside of campus, and various other programs, gaining unique experiences and learning opportunities available only in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the program, on July 10 the students, accompanied by three Sophia University students, visited TODAtte?<\/strong>, an experiential facility operated by Toda Corporation, a partner company of the SAFICs program, and toured the TODA Building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit began with an introductory presentation by Mr.Okada, , the Construction Manager, who explained the building\u2019s concept and distinctive features in a meeting room. The participants were then guided through the office floors, employee cafeteria, rooftop terrace, exterior areas, and underground facilities. Students were particularly impressed by the building\u2019s smart-office systems, which utilize mobile applications to manage attendance, individually control air conditioning and lighting, and monitor the availability of meeting rooms and restrooms. The tour provided a valuable opportunity to experience firsthand Japan\u2019s advanced workplace practices and architectural technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this visit, the students gained a deeper understanding of cutting-edge technologies, sustainability initiatives, and innovations in workplace environments within Japanese companies. It also served as a meaningful opportunity for international collaborative learning, where Japanese students and students from Africa could learn together and exchange ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
